Join your fellow grrrls online for The Craft Coven: Write Like A Grrrl’s monthly reading and writing workshop. Hosted by Write Like A Grrrl tutor Sara Sherwood, The Coven is a place for writers and readers to gather in a circle with other wonderful and welcoming grrrls, to harness the magic of reading like a writer to enrich your own writing.

This autumn, The Coven will turn their attention to one of the most discussed authors of our age: Sally Rooney.

We’ll look at Rooney's novels in chronological order, beginning with Conversations with Friends and ending with Intermezzo. Book for all four workshops — and see the evolution of Rooney’s writing and the themes she returns to again and again — or come along to the one you want to talk about the most and dive deep into her grasp of character, dialogue and setting.

Monday 1 September (7-9 p.m.): Conversations with Friends by Sally Rooney
Monday 13 October (7-9 p.m.): Normal People by Sally Rooney
Monday 3 November (7-9 p.m.): Beautiful World, Where Are You by Sally Rooney
Monday 1 December (7-9 p.m.): Intermezzo by Sally Rooney

To take part just read the text of the month, and spend time underlining sentences with your glitter pens, daydream about character, motivation and super-objectives and work out how the author of the month creates the perfect setting for the story. You then bring to the workshop all your brilliant observations to discuss with the group or just listen in. No pressure!

The workshop will be split into two parts: the first half will be a discussion about the text, where you’ll share what you’ve picked up from the text. Then we’ll have a break for refuelling with snacks and drinks before doing writing exercises inspired by the craft of the novel.

When you sign up to the class, you’ll receive a welcome from Sara, along with hints and tips of what to look for when you’re reading. If you’re feeling shy about sharing your thoughts, that’s fine too - everyone is welcome take part however they wish. No pressure ever!

Bring your cosiest blankets, a hot brew and your revolutionary spirit, and get ready to look deeply at the novel of the month that will inspire your writing in 2025.
