KIRSTIN INNES workshop: 'Writing What You Don't Know' 21 Jan

WRITING WHAT YOU DON'T KNOW: workshop with Kirstin Innes
While 'write what you know' is a time-honoured maxim for writers, how do we take that next step into a building a fictional world with elements that aren't from our own experience? And how do we use research as part of the process? Join the award-winning author of Scabby Queen, Fishnet and the forthcoming The Book of Risk for a two-hour workshop combining reflections on creative practice, writing exercises, discussions around world-building and a deep dive into how novelists convert research into fiction.
Kirstin Innes is the author of the novels Fishnet (2015) and Scabby Queen (2020) and the forthcoming The Book of Risk (2027), and co-author of the non-fiction book Brickwork: A Biography of The Arches. Fishnet won The Guardian’s Not The Booker Prize, and Scabby Queen was nominated for the Gordon Burn Prize and the Saltire Scottish Novel of the Year. Kirstin’s background is in journalism — she’s a former Assistant Editor of The List and columnist with The Press & Journal.

HOW I DID IT with Rebecca Hannigan 15 December

Join author Rebecca Hannigan for a special one-hour online workshop and an honest, practical look at what it really takes to get your book into the world. Rebecca will share her experience of writing and publishing her debut fiction book Darkrooms exploring the creative, emotional, and logistical challenges of finding her voice, finding an agent, and working with editors. You'll also have plenty of space to ask all your burning questions!
Hannigan's first novel is equal parts engrossing character study and moody thriller . . . This brooding, atmospheric suspense novel explores the grim underbelly of a small Irish town; perfect for fans of Tana French and Liz Nugent ― Library Journal
Darkrooms is a powerful firecracker of a debut. It's an unflinching and brutal thriller, but a rare, bleeding and cadenced feminist story lurks just beneath. It is, in a single word, astonishing ―LUCY ROSE, AUTHOR OF THE LAMB

MORE FOR MEMBERS...
We’ve got a brilliant run of events to take you through the end of the year and into 2026! On 3 December, we have Radical Wintering with Kirsty Strang-Roy. Bring a brew and come exactly as you are for an hour of gentle, generative writing exploring the idea of “wintering”: embracing fallow periods, slowness and the power of radical rest. Featuring words from Katherine May, Liz Berry, Camille T. Dungy, and others. On December 15, Rebecca Hannigan will share her experience of writing and publishing her debut novel Darkrooms. She’ll reflect on shaping her haunting, psychologically rich story and navigating the realities of bringing a debut novel into the world. And on 29 Jan we have Hattie Williams discussing her banger of a debut novel Bittersweet, plus workshops from Katie Goh, Claire Daverley and more announced soon!
